Ford engineers working since 2001 on inflatable seatbelts triumph in projecting this concept in their vehicles. Inflatable seat belts are for rear passenger compartment. Analysts found only 62 % rear passengers using seat belts when compared with 82 % seat belts usage in the front passenger compartment. The inflatable seatbelts are reported to be more comfortable than the conventional seatbelts.
The small inflatable nylon airbag is folded in the chest belt which takes less than 15 ms to deploy. The bag inflates using helium and argon mixture compressed at 4000 to 6000 psi. The cold compressed mixture of helium and argon keeps the bag at ambient temperature conditions.
The seatbelt spreads crash forces thorough the torso which reduces the pressure forces exerted on the chest. Ford is committed to manipulate this concept in global market to help saving the human lives.
