This term is not new for the Porsche lovers but for many people it is still a strange name. It was originally developed for Porsche supercars but today it is also used in the passenger cars as well including Panamera. This technology was developed for instant gear changes with almost negligible power losses during the gear shift. The result is the better acceleration, lower fuel consumption and a minimum effort.
The importance of PDK cannot be neglected especially in races where you need to make new lap records. Thanks to PDK which has enlisted Porsche in best lap records in many races. PDK is fully functional in both the manual and automatic gear modes.
PDK is actually the two gear boxes mounted in one. One gear box is for even number of gears ( 2, 4, 6 ) and the other is for odd ones( 1, 3, 5, 7 ). Each gear box is attached to one separate clutch. These two clutches alternatively attach the two gear boxes with the engine via two drive shafts.
The basic idea behind the PDK is the use of overhead transmission. If a particular gear is selected, the next one is automatically preselected with opening of the clutch followed by the closing of the previous one. This results in the rapid gear change in fraction of seconds.
If you are still confused with PDK, feel free to comment.
