Visitors Pour into Frankfurt Motor Show on the Last Weekend: Exhibitors Are Delighted

FRANKFURT, Germany - September 26, 2009: "The 63rd IAA Cars has greatly exceeded all our expectations. The world’s most important trade show for mobility has proved to be a crowd-puller even under very difficult circumstances. We will have around 850,000 visitors at the IAA, far exceeding our own target of 750,000,” stressed Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), at the International Motor Show, which runs until 27 September.

It does not make much sense to use the IAA 2007, which took place during an economic boom, as a guide. “The general conditions have changed completely,” Wissmann emphasized. But even as compared to the record IAA in 2007, the fall in visitor numbers was “only just about half of what we expected.” The drop was mostly due to the fact that for reasons of cost the exhibiting firms were “extremely cautious” when it came to inviting customers to the IAA. “If you look at the general public that buy their admission tickets on the door, you see that attendance has gone down by only 5 per cent. People are just as enthusiastic as ever about automobiles, the halls housing the 100 world premieres are attracting huge numbers of visitors, and some of them are full to overflowing,” Wissmann said. The “regal weather” was also pulling in the IAA guests to the open-air site with its varied program of events ranging from the off-road circuit to test drives.
The Delighted Visitors

This distinguishes the IAA from other motor shows that this year have suffered falls in visitor numbers in the upper double-digit range or have even been cancelled altogether.

“The old equation ‘congestion on the roads means a well attended IAA’ lost its validity a long time ago. We have continued to work with the city and the police to optimize the management of parking lots for the IAA, and this time we reserved a sufficient number of spaces right close to the trade show. This has benefited the visitors to the IAA – they have more time for going round the exhibition. Even the police are surprised that everything is going so well,” Wissmann explained. There was more “congestion” in the exhibition halls, he added. All the halls at the IAA were popular with visitors, especially the new Hall 11 occupied by BMW, which forms another major focus in the west part of the IAA.

“Our exhibitors – manufacturers and suppliers alike – are also very satisfied with this IAA, as the stand managers have told me in great and varied detail during my extensive tours. The public is very knowledgeable and interested. And our survey has shown that one IAA visitor in four wants to buy a car in the next six months,” the VDA president emphasized.

The IAA is open to the public until 7.00 p.m. on Sunday, 27 September 2009.

Volvo brings the new Pedestrian Safety System

Volvo brings the new Automatic Braking Technology in the market in its upcoming models. This improved intelligent system will certainly reduce the on road accidents. Previously, the safety system was for vehicle-vehicle collision but now this system makes the human life even safer than it previously was. Automatic Braking System detects the pedestrians in front of car and the full brakes are applied if the car’s speed is below 24km/h. At greater speeds, the impact speed is reduced and this intelligent system tries its best to minimize the collision impact. The reduction in collision impact can save many precious lives. The fatality risk can be reduced upto 80 percent as claimed by Thomas Broberg, safety expert at Volvo cars.

How the Automatic Braking System works?
This is a very general question that how this system works in harmony with the driver? In an emergency case, the audible sound is heard to make the driver alert along with the emergency signal light in the head up display. If the driver does not responds and the accident seems to be certain, then full brakes are applied automatically and hence the accident can be completely avoided for speeds less than 24 km/h.

State-of-the-art technology opens the new world of AI
This new artificial intelligent system is composed of a dual mode radar unit which is installed in the car’s grill, a high resolution camera at the back of the rear view mirror and CCU (Central Control Unit). Radar detects the onroad objects and their distance from the car where as the camera detects the type of the object and the pedestrians moving patterns. This system deserves appreciation especially for monitering the pedestrians early who are about to step on road.
Thanks to Volvo who bring this advanced system in their vehicles and ensure the safety of the pedestrians.

2010 Jaguar XK Coupe: where luxury ends !!

The 2010 Jaguar XK Coupe comes with the traditional Jaguar design (with slight changes) in the 2010 Jaguar-XK series models. The car seems to be like Aston martin DB-7 according to some analysts. To me, the front grill resembles to that of Aston martin’s DB-7 while the rest of the car is completely changed. Two door Jaguar XK is designed by the famous designer, lan Callum, the one who designed Aston Martin DB-7. The new 2+2 competes with other coupe models in luxury and performance.

The front grills are elliptic with the air intake just underneath it and the other two under the front lights. The roof meets the rear end of the car body like Porsche Panamera. LED tail lights give a new pompous appearance to this coupe. The car has got the beautiful interior with all the luxurious features that a real car lover is in need of like Adaptive dynamics, Jaguar Drive Selecter, Active Differential Control, Stability Control, front and side air bags, Air Quality Sensor, Front Car Assist and seven inch LCD Screen. Drive the new Jaguar to the country side with the powerful 525 watt stereo system and enjoy the iPod and USB connectivity with the leather interior.

The 2010 Jaguar XK has a 5.0 L V-8 engine being capable to deliver 385 hp to the wheels at 6500 engine rpm and 380 lb-ft torque at 3500 rpm. The new coupe has the six speed automatic transmission with the optional manual gear change.

The new coupe is available for 83,000 $ without having the air bag facility.

VCT (Variable Cam Timing) technology increases the engine performance

Variable Cam Timing has brought the revolution in the auto industry. This innovative concept employs opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves accordingly which results in enhanced engine performance and lowers the fuel consumption and emissions. This new technology was used for the first time by Ford. It is now being used by Nissan and some other automakers.

How it works?
The basic idea is to control the valve timing electronically. The engine oil is directed into the camshaft phasor cavity by the electronically controlled hydraulic valves. The Phasor Cavity Module (PCM) transmits the electric signal to the solenoids to move the valves that control the flow of the oil into the phasor cavity which in turn controls the valve timing of the engine.

This is a brief overview of the VCT technology. For further details, click here

Judge the driving style by looking at the tyres

You can easily judge the driving style of a person by just looking at the shape of the tyres. That is why it is commonly said that “Driving style matters a lot!” and there is no doubt. So here are the few tips by using which you can easily tell the driving style of a person. It falls in three categories, patches on tyre, side threads disappear, center threads disappear. I will briefly discuss each of them.
Patches on tyre
Patches are formed on the tyres due to excessive braking. When a driver applies the brakes, the wheels are locked. So what happens is that if the driver is used of applying excessive brakes, then only certain portion of the tyre comes in contact with the earth and as a result, patches are formed.

Side threads Disappear
The main reason for the side threads to disappear is under inflation. If the driver drives the car keeping the tyres under inflated, then side threads disappear
and the tyre will look as shown in the image below.

Center threads disappear
Center threads are disappeared due to over inflation. Most of the drivers drive their vehicles keeping the tyres over inflated. So in most of the cases, you will see the center threads disappeared.

If anything is unclear to you, then comment please.

2010 Audi e-tron Concept unveiled as an electric supercar

Where you have high performance BMW Vision EfficientDynamic Concept in the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi is no more behind. Audi releases its new electric concept super car on tuesday, Audi Etron, with some new dynamic features and big tyres. The company claims that its prototype will be there on road next year and production will start in 2012. This car resembles Audi R8 with some unique changes. The front aluminum grilled frame seems to be a bit wider than conventional Audi R8 models. The innovative design of the front lights gives it a unique ultimate look. The car seems to be quite strange without the side view mirrors, this is as though a man without ears (just a comic relief). Actually the side view mirrors are replaced with the camera system which monitors the cars coming from behind.

The new Audi concept is so simple from the side that there is nothing much to say on it where as the rear view is very attractive. The tail lights are a bit narrow which are completely homogenized with the body.

The new super car is supposed to be driven with four electric motors, two for front axle and two for the rear one. The lithium ion batteries are used to power the electric motors with the capacity of 42.4 kWh which can drive the new sports car upto 248 km. The car can accelerate from 0 – 60 miles in 4.8 secs.
Some of the unique features as I cited above include the torque vectoring concept (being used in Porsche), use of a heat pump, thermal management system.

Torque Vectoring concept provides extra stability to the car in sharp turns and evenly distributes the torque to all the four motors. Heat pump heats up the interior of the car quite effectively as desired where as the thermal management system controls the electronics and battery.
Lets discuss the interior of the car. An innovative side view LCD screen is used instead of the side view mirrors. Another LCD for navigation purposes is used between the two speed dials. Rest of the interior is very simple with no additional buttons on the dashboard.
Performance Stats:
Acceleration – 0 – 60 mph in 4.8 secs
Motor Power – 313 hp

Which steps should I take to buy a new car?

Yesterday, I was reading an article on “the steps to buy a new car” and I really found it useful. So I thought to share some of its important points. I myself have seen so many car buyers who keep changing their autos time and again but still not satisfied with the single one. The result is that they curse their cars all the time driving and finally sell it. Here are some of the steps to be followed before you go to buy a new auto.

• What are your practical needs for a new vehicle?
The first question you need to answer is what are your practical needs for the car. I mean for how long you plan to keep it with you? Does it meet the space requirements for your family? What should be the luggage capacity? How long you need to drive it daily? On what type of terrain you want to drive it?
After finding the answers of all these questions switch yourself to the second question.

• Can you spend a part of your monthly budget on car?
This a very important point to be noticed. Every machine degrades with the passage of time and demands a proper maintenance. This is as the appetite demands food from you. So what you need to know is that can you really spend a part of your monthly income on repair, tuning, service, fuel and other costs on your car?

• Do you really like the car you are going for?
Do you really love the car you want to buy because the more you love it, the more you can spend on it and the longer it will be with you. So do not be emotional, take your time, think that which car attracts you the most and fulfill your basic needs apart from luxury.

• Have a test drive without the presence of the car’s owner
This is the most important thing you are going to do because after this the car is going to be yours. Never take a test drive in the presence of the car’s owner. First see the exterior of the car. Is it repainted? Are the bumpers cracked? Are there scratches on the winshield because it affects your drive at night?
Now open the bonnet and have a deep look on all the accessories. Do they satisfy you? Does the engine seem reasonably old? Which battery does it has? Is the engine oil upto the desired level? Is any wire broken?
After having a detailed view, sit in the car. Test the electronics properly. Are the front and tail lights, indicators, parking and brake lights working properly? Does wiper works? Is the speedometer alright? See the luggage capacity.
After having done this, drive the car in the owner’s absence. Observe where it lacks you interests? Have a drive for atleast one week daily and see does it meet all your requirements? If YES, then go for it and keep it with you for years as the old American man keeps his old Gran Torino (an inspiring movie) !!!

Variable Compression Ratio gives the better fuel economy

VCR (Variable Compression Ratio) is not a very recent technology but many of you may not be well aware of this terminology. It has been existing since decades but only within the boundaries of the laboratories. The reason for not using this technology in the cars is the mechanical complexity of the system but with the advancement in technology, this system is now available in the market. VCR actually increases the fuel efficiency by varying the compression ratios of the engine cylinders depending upon the required pressure and loads. At high loads, a low compression ratio gives the more economical results.
The basic concept is to change the volume above the top dead center of the piston. Turbo chargers enhance the power requirements of the engine but at the same time they tend to increase the pressure inside the cylinder. The increased pressure results in the detonation (which is undesirable) before the burning of the fuel. So by varying the compression ratio, detonation can be avoided. Thanks to VCR which fulfills the basic need of a better fuel economy.

Hydraulic system is used to alter the engine head which then responds desirably on power requirements and results in a low fuel consumption. Saab automobiles used this technology for the first time in year 2000. A 1.6 L, 228 hp Variable Compression Ratio super charged engine was used in Saab prototype vehicle to which they named as SVC (Saab Variable Compression). The company claimed 30 % reduction in fuel consumption after using VCR engine.

BMW releases its new concept Vision EfficientDynamics

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is a new concept plug in hybrid car that is to be displayed before public in the Frankfurt Motor Show. I just said “WOW” when I came across this car. The complete innovative exterior design with some awesome features has brought this car to the platform of top rated concept cars. The four seater BMW has the typical two grilled front frame with the BMW logo in the center. The headlights are a bit narrow. The side view mirrors are positioned a little above than where they normally are. This is done to reduce the drag and improve the aerodynamics.

Front View

The new BMW concept is a plugin hybrid technology with 1.5 litres 3 cylinder turbodiesel engine. 163 hp engine when combined with two electric motors give it a tremendous 356 hp with 590 lb-ft of torque. The car has two hybrid systems in general. Rear wheel hybrid system, being composed of the electric motor and the engine, powers the rear wheel axle where as the front one powers the front wheels with the aid of the second electric motor operated on battery. The car uses a highly efficient typical lithium ion battery. The battery can be charged in just 2.5 hours with the total capacity of 10.8 kWh.
Front End View

The astonishing attribute of this BMW concept is its very low fuel consumption of 62.6 mpg. The car can go from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.8 secs. The chassis made of aluminium keeps the car very light, it is only 1395 kg.
This left hand drive has a single door when viewed from the side which look like the butterfly wings when opened. The car has an extremely low profile. The tyres are beautifully designed which give the look of the rotor attached to the center of the it. The side cuts lower the overall drag with enhanced performance.
Side View

The new BMW concept has innovative taillights. These are kept thin to improve the aerodynamics of the car. The taillights are projected towards the side body of the car which look extremely fragile from their appearance.
Rear End View

Will this concept remain a concept? This depends on the success of the new BMW. What do you think??
Let us enjoy the animated video!!

Its unique and innovative aerodynamic style adds a real value in the over all car’s performance.
458 Italia has been intelligently designed to improve the fuel efficiency, acceleration and reduce the overall drag. The front lights seem to be really attractive which are extended a little more than the other Ferrari models. A really innovative element of this Ferrari is that the front winglets are deformed a little at high speeds to enhance the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Front End View

The car is quite simple when seen from the side. The side frame is a little concave and projected towards inside. The exterior of the car gives it a complete sporty look.
Let us have a rear view of the car. It has got the two central aligned tail pipes with the third at the center. The tail lights are positioned at the two rear ends of the car. The body is mostly composed of aluminum which keeps the car only 1380 kg in weight.

The new 458 Italia has come with some stunning features of the centralized control system on steering wheel and Vehicle Dynamic Assistance System. This system moniters the thermal statistics of the engine, brakes and tyres and let the driver know if the car gets overheated. So you need not to worry about your Ferrari engine heating up even if you are driving at 200 mph, just drive in chill.
Centralized control steering wheel system employs the thumb actuated buttons which control the head lights, indicators and the wipers. The audio controls are mounted on the back of the steering wheel. The LCD screen has a wide range of options which include Bluetooth handsfree, GPS navigation and iPod etc. This new Ferrari provides you the extreme luxury with other sports car utilities.
Interior

The ABS (Anti lock braking system) is governed by the ECU (Engine Control Unit) which provides a better brake response and control on the car than the previous Ferrari models.
The 4.5 litres, mid mounted V8 engine provides 562 hp. This tremendous power accelerates the car from 0 – 100 kmph in just 3.4 secs. 458 Italia has the net torque 398 lb-ft of which 80 percent is available at only 3250 rpm. This rear wheel drive has got the seven speed dual clutch transmission system. The fuel consumption is 13.7 L/ 100 km which for a super car is quite reasonable, with the emissions being 320 g/ km and the top speed of the car is 202 mph.
watch the video for further details!!!

Take a deep breath because the new Ferrari is just an hours away from you…
